The MHEDP Explorer is a web-based application developed using the R programming language to report on the number of mental health emergency department (ED) presentations across defined statistical areas (SA3) in Victoria. The geographic map can be shaded based on the measure chosen, i.e:
The data was retrieved from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) which is publicly
available. Specifically, the Mental health services provided in emergency departments 2017-18
data set was downloaded and used for this Shiny app. The data can be downloaded
To draw the statistical area boundaries, Victorian shape files were downloaded from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and rendered into a map. Specifically, the Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3) ASGS Ed 2016 Digital Boundaries in ESRI Shapefile Format was used. This can be downloaded here.
Two data sources have been used to calculate the mental health ED presentations per 100,000 rate, namely, the mental health ED presentations data provided by the AIHW and the population data from the AIHW. Population data is publicly available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). These are not officially calculated and/or published rates and should only be treated as indicative only. The population data can be downloaded here.
